Characteristics and Objectives:
Forest Science is a 2-year Second Cycle Degree equivalent to a Master of Science. The program is conducted entirely in English and is designed for Bachelor graduates with backgrounds in forestry, agriculture, biology, or the environment. It aims to train high-profile graduates with a holistic and innovative vision, preparing them for work in the management and conservation of natural resources at national, European, or international scales.
Forest Science offers two specialization paths:
Forest and Land Management: Trains specialists in sustainable management, conservation, and integrated valorization of forests and natural resources. Students gain awareness and understanding of forest ecosystem functioning and skills for sustainable management, particularly in mountainous Alpine and Mediterranean contexts.
Forest Conservation and Governance: Trains specialists in the governance of forests and natural ecosystems, addressing issues such as climate change, deforestation, land use change, and biodiversity conservation. Students develop an understanding of complex socio-ecological systems and skills for identifying innovative solutions for responsible forest management in line with major global environmental issues.
In both curricula, scientific and technical knowledge is complemented by statistics, GIS, mapping techniques, research, and project management methods. Soft skills such as communication and group work capacity are also emphasized.
Learning in Forest Science takes place in an international and multicultural environment. Students have the opportunity to participate in the TRANSFOR-M double degree, spending their second year in a Canadian university (University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, Lakehead University) and earning two degree titles. The program also engages in Erasmus Mundus double degrees and maintains close links with other international Forest Schools and organizations like EFIMed FAO, EFI, WWF, and CIFOR.
Occupational Opportunities:
Forest Science graduates have career opportunities in public and private institutions, agencies, governmental and non-governmental organizations. They can work as planners, designers, managers, and supervisors in sustainable and responsible forest management, natural and semi-natural habitat management, land management and protection, landscape management, and the use and valorization of forest resources and ecosystem services on a national or international level. Moreover, this high-profile educational path facilitates access to basic or applied research or doctoral programs in Italy or abroad.
